Japanese repair paper is slotted between the leather and the boards and over the text block to provide a secure base on which to attach the damaged spine section.
The book is bound with a bandage to maintain pressure and keep the leather in place until the adhesive has bonded.
This endband was largely detached from the book prior to treatment. A needle is used to feed thread through the section of the endband that remains strong. This technique reattaches it to the text block ensuring that it won't be lost before it is possible to carry out a full treatment.
Long ends from the thread are left in place.
The thread is attached to the text block using a piece of fine japanese repair paper adhered with wheat starch paste.
The repair complete. The primary concern in this case was to stabilise the volume for access, however, where the aesthetics of the object are a concern, the repair paper can be toned to blend with the leather.
The leather is consolidated and adhered to the Japanese paper repair.
