This is a past event

For this term's third meeting of the Art History Seminar, jointly sponsored with Film Studies and Visual Culture, and the Aberdeen Centre for Russian and East European History, Dr Amy Bryzgel (Aberdeen) will give a paper entitled "Eastern European Performance Art and the Northeast of Scotland: Pioneering Artists, Surprising Connections."

All welcome.

The Northeast of Scotland has surprising connections with contemporary performance artists from Eastern Europe. This talk will discuss some of the pioneers of performance art who came to Scotland from Eastern Europe in the 1970s, such as Marina Abramovic (Yugoslavia) and Paul Neagu (Romania), and examine the legacy of their work. A point of focus will be the work of Serbian-born Tanja Ostojic, who will be in Aberdeen later this year. Ever since her ground-breaking work, Looking for a Husband with an EU Passport (2000-2004), where she advertised herself online in order to find a man willing to marry her so that she could more easily travel across Europe, her work has focused on issues of migration, the status of refugees in the West, not to mention the place of women in these challenging situations.

Tanja Ostojic will be featured in a Director's Cut event jointly organised with History of Art on 1 April; further details at www.abdn.ac.uk/directorscut
