About the School
The School of Divinity, History and Philosophy comprises Divinity and Religious Studies, History, History of Art and Philosophy. It has a vibrant research community and has fostered the development of the Northern Institute of Philosophy, the Centre for the Study of Spirituality, Health and Disability and the Centre for Scandinavian Studies among others. The School is also a major contributor to the Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies and the Centre for Early Modern Studies.
The School presently includes over forty full-time lecturing staff, together with several part-time and honorary research/teaching fellows and a number of support staff. Administrative and support services are provided by a full-time School Administrative Officer, a full complement of secretarial staff as well as part-time librarian in Divinity.
Research
There is an active postgraduate research culture with well over a hundred students undertaking PhD study across the School, some part-time and some full-time, many of whom have shared office space within the School premises. The School has a Research Committee, which monitors performance in external funding, considers priorities in terms of study leave, and provides funding to help support staff in attending conferences and giving papers, and organising colloquiums and conferences. The University's Historic Collections and Archives are of exceptional value for research in History, and Art Historians benefit from the George Washington Wilson photography archive, Peacock Print Archive, and Aberdeen Art Gallery.
Divinity and Religious Studies
Divinity and Religious Studies achieved a top rating in the RAE2008, placing it firmly amongst the best few departments in the UK. International conferences are regularly hosted by the department, supplementing weekly research seminars in each discipline that provide an opportunity for staff and postgraduates to present research ideas and receive feedback, as well as providing a platform for external speakers working on cognate research areas.
The RAE2008 showed that History in Aberdeen has become a top rated department in Scotland. Similarly, History of Art is widely regarded as an important growing unit with an ambitious research agenda. The Research Institute for Irish and Scottish Studies (RIISS), Centre for Early Modern Studies, Centre for Scandinavian Studies and other research centres within the School run regular seminars and many of their projects are on historical subjects.
Philosophy
Philosophy at Aberdeen has been rejuvenated in recent years by new professorial appointments, including a Regius Chair in Moral Philosophy, together with a number of international scholars to lectureships. The establishment of the Northern Institute of Philosophy in 2009 promises to transform the way philosophical research is pursued in Aberdeen en route towards the next REF2013.
Teaching
All disciplines within the School have been consistently adjudged to be highly satisfactory and worthy of high commendation in reviews by QAA Subject experts in recent years.
The School offers a wide range of undergraduate courses in History, History of Art, and Philosophy leading to an MA (without Honours) after three years or, more usually, a single or joint Honours MA after four years.
Undergraduate teaching in Divinity and Religious Studies includes the BTh and BD degrees as well as the four year MA degrees in Divinity or Religious Studies either single or jointly Honours with a range of other subjects.
The School is also involved in the development of the University's Distance Learning initiative, making vocational courses, with the help of electronic aids, available to the Scottish Highlands and Islands and the North East. Each year dozens of students register for the Certificate, Diploma and BTh in Christian Studies by Distance Learning, as well as other programmes offered by the Centre for Lifelong Learning.
The School is home to one of the largest populations of postgraduate students in the University of Aberdeen, including students pursuing a wide range of both taught and research degrees across all the disciplines within the School. Details of our taught postgraduate provision can be found here.
