We're delighted to launch this year's programme for National Science and Engineering Week. Supported by BP, the University of Aberdeen and the Scottish Government we're bringing you a packed week of talks, shows, exhibitions and activities. Come along and let us illuminate your imagination this March!

We've designed a simple and inexpensive schools challenge to link into this year's theme - Our World in Motion. Open the guidance notes for all the details and get your class designing their own contraption!

LAUNCH EVENT: Come join the time-travelling Dr Death for a comic look at medicine throughout the ages in this scientifically accurate panto for children and other generally childish people. Presented by Simon Watt of Channel 4's Inside Nature's Giants and The Elephant: Life After Death.

Saturday 10 March

It's not just shoppers mingling in Union Square. Come along and let our science buskers show you some on-the-spot demos. Our STEM-in-the-BODY teams will be using no more than the wonders of their own bodies to reveal some amazing anatomical facts. Meanwhile our SCIENCE STOPS teams will be producing all manner of props from their larger-than-life lab coats! 10am - 4pm

Sunday 11 March

Take part in CSI “Rockpool” in this fun-packed day that includes tickets to see the divers feed the fish. Dr Alan Jamieson from the University of Aberdeen Oceanlab will also be on hand with some never-seen-before deep sea animals collected on his last voyage to the mid-Atlantic.

Mark Beaumont is an adventurer, author, expedition cameraman and speaker. He has recently been a member of the Atlantic Odyssey Challenge crew, attempting to row the Atlantic in under 30 days. His story is a personal rollercoaster of mental and physical endurance that gives a fascinating insight into the world we live in. 7.30pm

Monday 12 March

In our latest cafe MED we're looking at stem cell research in arthritis. Stem cells are like the body's own repair kit, having the potential to regenerate damaged joint issues. Come and discuss the latest therapy developments with Professor Cosimo De Bari (Chair in Translational Medicine) and Professor David Reid (Consultant Rheumatologist).

Tuesday 13 March

The Aberdeen University Science Magazine, Au, presents a hilarious look at the unconventional lives of graduate students as they struggle to find balance between research, teaching and their personal lives.

In this, the first Cafe Cosmos of the new season, we will look at the science of the Northern Lights and why 2012 might be an exciting year for aurora spotters. A star show from TechFest-SetPoint's Cosmic Dome team will preceed the talk, which is presented by James Reid of the University of Aberdeen. 7pm

Join Professor Stephen Redpath, Chair in Conservation Science at the University of Aberdeen to discuss “Tackling the conflicts that threaten biodiversity conservation”. It promises to be an informative evening with a suitably ecologically sound supper from Buchanans from 6pm.

Wednesday 14 March

What might our future diets look like and can we keep eating like we do now? As experts gather in Aberdeen for The Nutrition Society's Spring conference, join Dr Jennie Macdiarmid and Dr Janet Kyle of The Nutrition Society for a discussion on environmentally friendly diets for a healthier population and planet.

Thursday 15 March

Skeptics in the pub, the regular relaxed and friendly pub discussion on all things sceptical, teams up this year with Bring Your Own Brain to explore the most powerful computer of all - our incredible brain! Speakers will include a mix of researchers from different disciplines who study the brain in different ways, from psychology to biochemistry. 7.30pm

As our fossil energy resources diminish and the cost increases, we are faced with some challenging issues regarding travel and transport. The hidden energy in the goods that we buy contributes significantly to CO2 levels and climate change. This lecture offers some interesting alternatives and encourages the audience to ask questions about their own habits!

Friday 16 March

How would you fair running 2,659 miles in 77 days? That's exactly what GP Andrew Murray did last year, helping to raise money for charity along the way. Now with the arrival of Olympics Year he's working as the Scottish Government's Physical Activity Champion., An inspirational evening that might make you think differently about your health and lifestyle.

Saturday 17 March

This year's Discovery Day is packed with shows, hands-on science, exhibitions and displays. Make your own plastic, meet Mr Bug, hear about the secret life of the skeleton, make your own molecules and much more. Entry is only £1. Doors open at 10am with activities running throughout the day. 10am - 4pm

Come and dance the night away at our science-charged ceilidh with live music supplied by the Rollin' Stovies and dances including the Dashing White Scientist, Strip the Theorist and the Canadian Boffin Dance. Science comedy turns featuring St Andrews lecturer Dr Alun Hughes and Bright Club star Peter Harrison. Hot stovies are included in your ticket price. Why wouldn't you be there?

Each March the British Science Association Aberdeen Branch brings you dozens of events to celebrate the UK's only national festival of science - National Science and Engineering Week. Working in partnership with the University of Aberdeen and other partners, and with support from BP and the Scottish Government, our programme has events for people of all ages and interests.
