NEW: DOWNLOAD Full Summer / Autumn Programme Here
Our discussion forum in Aberdeen city centre continues to run from June through to October 2009. Cafe Scientifique provides a monthly opportunity for members of the public to discuss topics in science, maths, engineering, medicine and technology.
LATEST: NEXT SESSION AND THE LAST ONE FOR 2009: Wednesday 14 October, 7pm, Waterstone's Union Bridge Branch (ADMISSION FREE, NO BOOKING)
DIET MATTERS: Dr Alex Johnstone of the University of Aberdeen Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health
Dr Johnstone will be talking on the abundance of widespread myths surrounding dieting and weight loss, varying from misconceptions about how our metabolic rate functions, th
rough to believing weight is governed only by genetics. She plans to invite the audience to discuss these common misconceptions and share the scientific facts which debunk those myths. She will also discuss the merits of a high protein diet for weight control and show examples of high protein vegetarian and meat based meals which can be eaten as part of a weight loss diet. The aim will be to show that dieting does not need to be about eating lettuce leaves and portion size needn’t be compromised in order to lose weight.
The event, as always, will take place in the Costa Café area of Waterstone’s Union Bridge branch and commences at 7pm. The session will kick off with an introduction by Dr Johnstone leading into a longer open-mic discussion where questions will be taken from the audience. There is no need to book for the talk which is free to attend and open to all.

Where and When?
All our Cafe Scientifique sessions take place in Waterstone's Aberdeen Union Bridge branch and commence at 7pm. Entry is free and open to all. The evenings usually begin with a short presentation from the guest speaker, followed by a short session to mull over what has been said, chat informally and obtain drinks and snacks from the COSTA coffee bar. Finally, a chaired audience discussion follows lasting around an hour.
