Liz Hodge"We need to inspire the next generation of scientists and where better to look for role models than Universities, packed with enthusiastic people, many just starting out on their own journeys."

WELCOME! to the University of Aberdeen Public Engagement with Science pages. We're in the throws of National Science and Engineering Week, so our activities are very much linked into the British Science Association Aberdeen Branch at present.

You will find many events for all ages and interests over the next while. You can open or download the 2010 programme for National Science and Engineering Week below:-

You can also visit our Science Week page, at www.abdn.ac.uk/science/nsew for a listing of the events and a look at the schools programme too.

CAFE SCIENTIFIQUE 2010

We have launched two new Science Cafes in 2010, making three in total including our existing City Cafe in Waterstones Union Bridge. Details of sessions can be found at www.abdn.ac.uk/science/cafescience.

City Cafe (Waterstones Union Bridge )

The city cafe events will continue to take place on Wednesday evenings, roughly in the middle of each month from January through to October in the Costa Café area of Waterstone’s Union Bridge branch. All commence at 7pm.

Aberdeenshire Cafe (Woodend Barn, Banchory)

These will take place in the brand new restuarant complex at Woodend Barn, Banchory and will happen on the Tuesday before each City session from February to June. Sessions also commence at 7pm. Parking at the Barn is free and there is no admission costs for attending the events.

Cafe MED (Suttie Centre, Foresterhill Campus)

This is our pilot season of medically themed Cafe Science events. These will be held on the Monday evening before the sister city and shire events, launching on January 18th 2010 and running until May. The venue is the Suttie Centre ground floor cafe based at Foresterhill. Admission is free and parking will be available at the nearby hospital and IMS car parks.

The Public Engagement with Science Unit is part of the University's Office of External Affairs. We provide support to staff and students wishing to promote their research, or science generally, to a public audience. This involves making available help and opportunity across areas such as generic skills provision, development and delivery of events, partnership building and applying for funding. We work on a day-to-day basis with other colleagues in the University, including the three academic Colleges: College of Life Sciences and Medicine, College of Physical Sciences and the College of Arts and Social Sciences. We also liaise with our generic skills team ASPIRE, the Press and Policy team and Events Office alongide other parts of the communication team. We work regularly with many local partners including TechFest-SetPoint and Satrosphere as well as national and international organisations.
