Biography

I am the School Education and Outreach Officer for the School of Biological Sciences. I aim to engage school children and the general public with science and the environment through public events and school workshops.

Within the Aberdeen Biodiversity Centre we have a collection of taxidermy animals, bones and seashells which we use as a handling collection to help engage individuals with the natural world. We also utilise the fantastic resources with the Zoology Museum and Cruickshank Botanic Gardens.

I studied Biological Sciences for my first degree as I have always loved the natural world. During my undergraduate degree I used holidays to travel to some amazing places around the world and volunteer on conservation programmes. The more I saw of the diversity of life, the more I wanted to be involved in conserving it, but also to share the love of the nature with others. After completing my degree I spent a few years volunteering and travelling, before coming to Aberdeen to complete first a Masters and then a PhD in Ecology and Conservation. After completing my PhD, I moved to Australia where I worked for Zoos South Australia as a Conservation Officer, working on some amazing reintroduction programmes, conservation research and education programmes. I also became more involved in public engagement and communication and found that I really enjoyed this aspect of the job. That communication aspect I have continued into my current role, and I really love seeing the look of wonder on childrens faces when they discover something amazing about the wildlife around them.

My PhD was entitled "The habitat requirements and the population age structure of the Freshwater Pearl Mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera) in Scotland. I spent 3 glorious years travelling around the rivers and burns of Scotland, surveying this endangered and charismatic invertebrate, to try to understand why some populations are dying out and failing to successfully reproduce, and what could be done to halt and ultimately reverse the decline.

  • BSc Biological Sciences
    2002 - University of Exeter
