The University of Aberdeen, Rural Law Research Group is proud to announce its second Rural Law conference which will explore sustainable rural development under the cross-cutting themes of sustainability, diversification and planning.  The two day conference will take place at the University of Aberdeen, on Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd September 2011.

Background

This conference will allow legal practitioners, academics, landowners and managers and policy makers to address key opportunities and challenges facing the delivery of sustainable rural development in Scotland.  It will do so against the backdrop of the first sustainable land use strategy for Scotland, due to be published in March 2011, the impact of which will be most strongly felt in rural Scotland across the sectors of agriculture, forestry, renewable energy and access.  At the same time, the ongoing reform of the Common Agricultural Policy seeks to strengthen the long-term future of sustainable agriculture.  This conference will facilitate discussion of the policy and legal frameworks for sustainable agriculture, crofting and forestry; the role of renewable energy; and the future of access to the countryside.

Conference Aims

  • Consider the opportunities and challenges facing the delivery of sustainable rural development in Scotland.
  • Examine in detail the policy and legal developments affecting the cross-cutting themes of sustainable land use and management, diversification and rural development planning.
  • Look to the future of rural land use in Scotland, addressing key issues including:  sustainable agriculture, crofting, and forestry; renewable energy; and sustainable access.

Who should attend?

The conference is a must for solicitors with an interest in aspects of rural law, draws expertise from experienced practitioners and will count as 6 hours of CPD.  Registrations are also welcome from Members of the Scottish Parliament, MPs and MEPs, local and central government officers, farmers, lawyers, land managers, renewable energy organisations, members of national park boards, all organisations with an interest in access, academics, researchers, planners, environmental charities, community organisations, and those interested in the economic and cultural development of Scotland.
