On-farm measurements
Feed characteristics
Different processing, different abundance of small particles
Different incidence of SARA?
Although different farms use the same or similar ingredients, on-farm processing results in feeds with very different physical characteristics as measured by the Penn State Sieve Test. A large average particle size would be considered to be unlikely to result in SARA.
The platform for remote detection of SARA
Typical outcome for remote detection of SARA
Cattle are fitted with motion sensors, which it is hoped will give early indications of SARA, because the onset of SARA would be expected to alter rumination and chewing activity. The traces are extremely complicated, however, and we have yet to understand fully how motion sensing can detect and perhaps predict SARA.
