Pathways to health innovation for the food and drink industry

The University of Aberdeen Rowett Institute is at the heart of a number of initiatives to support the Scottish food and drink industry.

Why the Rowett?

business-diagramBecause our research is central to the development of innovative healthier products – if you don’t understand the nutrient profile or impacts of your ingredients you can’t develop a new product  or reformulate.

If you think we can help you to develop innovative healthier products please don’t hesitate to contact us:

Our latest Rowett Food Report

We are publishing some of research on food as a quarterly series of Food Reports – Summer 2012 pdf

We have an established track record of working with industry in the following areas:

New business creation

sirco and breadProvexis plc, spun-out from the Institute, markets Fruitflow ® a patented, scientifically-proven tomato extract which inhibits platelet aggregation, a known cause of heart attack, stroke and venous thrombosis, and Sirco® a heart-healthy pure juice. Read our Success Story on the Knowledge Scotland website.

Assisting existing Scottish companies to develop new products

Macphie of Glenbervie created a new bread with a high level of oats for a study of the role of oats in the dietary control of diabetes. The bread is now sold in all J G Ross bakery stores in the North East and selected branches of Tesco.

Enabling businesses to open-up new sectors by incorporating health benefits into mainstream foods

We are advising on the formulation of bespoke products for key companies. Research on protein-enriched diets has been used by M&S plc to develop their Simply Fuller Longer calorie-counted protein-enriched range

We also have a range of patents, licenses, technologies  and spin-out companies relevant to other life-science sectors.  We have launched five spin-outs in the last ten years.  We have also experience with working on successful drug-development programmes.  Contact Alan Rowe (as above) to discuss further.
