Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry

The Institute uses electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry to support research into programmes aimed at understanding the balance between diet and human health.  The LC/MS/MS instruments are used for the quantification of a range of metabolites by Multiple Reaction Monitoring (MRM), for the identification of proteins and de novo peptide sequencing following 2D PAGE electrophoresis to support proteomic research. The section has 4 instruments; an AB Sciex Q-Trap 2000, an AB Sciex Q-Trap 4000, an AB Sciex API 3200 and an Agilent 6490.

Facilities support research in:

  • Analysis of small molecules (phenolics, flavanoids, phospholipids)
  • Protein identification by peptide sequencing
  • Metabolite identification and quantification
