Overview of Research
Kate is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Education and an an associate of CRFR. Kate has a professional background in community development and health promotion in addition to her academic research experience. Her current research interests lie in the fields of young people, families, health and wellbeing and youth mentoring. She holds an honours degree in sociology and an MEd from the University of Aberdeen. Her doctoral study was an examination of informal mentoring which explored the perspectives of young people and adults on mentoring processes. She then took up a post to develop a joint health promotion strategy for a local authority and a health board and, as part of this work, secured funding to undertake a participatory study of health needs in a rural area. Following this she was awarded a user fellowship by the ESRC Health Variations Programme, the focus of which was to explore innovative approaches to improving the take up of new research on children and inequalities in health. More recently she was principal investigator of a two-year study of planned mentoring programmes that targeted vulnerable young people. She has also undertaken a study of the health needs of minority ethnic groups living in the North East of Scotland. She was a member of a multi disciplinary team commissioned by the Chief Scientist Office to carry out the external evaluation of the Scottish Demonstration Project aiming to improve teenage sexual health: Healthy Respect. Kate has undertaken and collaborated on a considerable number of externally funded studies.
Kate and her co-authors of a paper on work emerging from her ESRC user fellowship were awarded the 2004 Douglas Leather Award by the board of the international journal, Health Education Research. The paper, entitled “Practising what we preach?” was published in 18 (5) of Health Education Research. The journal offers this award yearly to authors who have produced a high quality paper which '... reflects the values that the founding editor strove to achieve.' The paper was based on work undertaken in collaboration with Sarah Cunningham-Burley, Kathryn Backett-Milburn and John Davis of the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Edinburgh and explored innovative approaches to linking research, policy and practice on children and health inequalities.
Kate is currently co-ordinating a collaborative seminar series, funded by the ESRC on Researching Youth Mentoring- Building theory and building evidence. The seminar series will bring together international researchers, policy makers and practitioners involved in the field of youth mentoring. Overall the seminars aim to contribute to a sounder theoretical framework for the concept and its practice. She is also involved in externally funded collaborative research studies for NHS Scotland.
