Biography

Thomas Bartlett has been Professor of Modern Irish History at University College Dublin since 1995. He was educated at Queen's University Belfast (BA, 1970, PhD 1976) and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor where he undertook graduate study in history, 1970-71. He was then awarded a research scholarship at the Institute of Irish Studies, Queen's University Belfast, where he worked towards his PhD thesis on the Townshend viceroyalty (1767-1772), conferred in 1976.

Professor Bartlett has held visiting professorships at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1982-3), at the University of Washington, Seattle (1997), and at the University of Notre Dame (1999). He was also Parnell Fellow in Irish Studies at Magdalene College, Cambridge (2001-2) and he was awarded a Government of Ireland Senior Fellowship in 2002. He was elected a member of the Royal Irish Academy in 1995.

Research Interests

Professor Bartlett is currently completing a Concise History of Ireland for Cambridge University Press (publication late 2007). His future research plans include a study of the military origins of the Irish state in the early modern period, and an examination of Irish attitudes towards the British Empire in the nineteenth century.
