PhD
Aberdeen University has built an outstanding group of specialists in Irish and Scottish studies across a wide variety of disciplines. They provide an environment in which PhD students can engage with leading-edge and interdisciplinary research in almost all aspects of Irish and Scottish culture, and in which they can acquire the expertise to be contributors to that research.
Aberdeen University Library has major collections dating back to before the University’s founding in 1483 that provide significant resources for research, and is especially strong in eighteenth and nineteenth-century holdings.
PhD students can get financial support from the College of Arts and Social Sciences which provides scholarships ranging from £15,000 (per year over three years) to one-year £1,000 awards.
Staff associated with the Institute, and areas in which they would welcome PhD applications include:
Professor Cairns Craig FBA, FRSE
Glucksman Professor of Irish and Scottish Studies
Professor Patrick J Crotty BA, PhD
Professor of Irish and Scottish Literature
Professor David Dumville
Professor of History and Palaeography
Dr Shane Alcobia-Murphy MA, PhD
