Students Progress Committees

Students' Progress Committees (SPCs) are sub-committees of each Undergraduate Programme Committee. SPCs (remit) meet annually in September to consider the cases of all students who have not satisfied the progress requirements for their degree programme (In the case of medicine, the Committee meets several times in the year). Students who have failed to meet the minimum progress requirements following the August examination diet are informed by the Senate Office of the date of the relevant SPC meeting and are invited to submit written evidence, including supporting medical documentation, as to why they should not be required to discontinue attendance on courses in accordance with the Regulations. Students are eligible to attend the SPC meeting, and may be accompanied/represented by a person of their choice.

Student Progress Regulations

Undergraduate

The University prescribes minimum credit requirements which undergraduate students must achieve in order to be able to progress to the next year of attendance. These progress requirements detailed in the General Regulations for First Degrees and any relevant Supplementary Regulations. These are published in the University Calendar and are often summarised for students in departmental documentation.

Postgraduate

Any student who has queries about the progress requirements for his or her degree should contact the Postgraduate Registry [postgrad contacts in directory] or the relevant programme co-ordinator, if applicable.

Termination of Study

Undergraduate students may have their studies terminated by the relevant Students' Progress Committee if they have failed to satisfy the minimum progress requirements as set out in General Regulation 16.1 of the University Calendar and, where relevant, in the Supplementary Regulations. Students in such a position have the right to submit representations against such termination to the Students' Progress Committee.

The Regulations for Postgraduate Study provide for the Senate to terminate a person's candidature provided that it is satisfied that there is sufficient reason for doing so. In addition, where appropriate, the University Calendar entry for a particular postgraduate taught degree/programme of study will indicate any specific requirements for progression (e.g. from the Diploma to the Master's stage) and may also specify the minimum level required for an award.
