Resit Exam /Re-Submission /Repeat Placement – Guidance Notes

The University doesn’t automatically enter students for any Resit Exam / Re-Submission or Repeat Placement. Therefore each student must apply by completing an Application Form or via the Online Store. We will not consider any other type of application.
All examinations must be taken in Aberdeen at the appropriate time. Permission is rarely given for examinations to be taken elsewhere, and only exceptional circumstances are considered. This does not include personal inconvenience or expense.

What can I apply for?

You can apply to resit an exam; re-submit coursework for assessment; or to undertake a repeat placement for a course.

Eligibility

Only students who hold a valid class certificate for the course to be re-assessed can apply. Class certificates are valid for the academic year the course was attended and the academic year immediately following it. Any queries about the validity of a class certificate should be directed to your Adviser of Studies or the Registry (exams@abdn.ac.uk). During this period a student can have up to three attempts to pass.

When Can I Resit an Exam?

If you have failed an exam taken in January, you can resit this first half session exam either in August of the same year or the January or August of the next academic session. You cannot resit the exam in May.

If you have failed an exam taken in May, you can resit this second half session exam either in August of the same year or the May or August of the next academic session. You cannot resit the exam in January.

We also publish the exam timetable online at www.abdn.ac.uk/registry/exams, and through the Infohub website or can post the exam timetable to you if an A4 stamped addressed envelope is enclosed with the Application Form.

Good Cause or Medical Absence

Students who missed their exam(s), submission deadline(s) or placement(s) due to medical, or other good cause reasons, which has been accepted by their School, must still apply to resit an exam by submitting an Application Form. No Resit Fee will be charged but a Late Fee will be charged for any application received after the appropriate deadline.

Late Applications

Late applications may not always be accepted and are subject to School approval which the student must seek and obtain.   Schools are not required to provide an exam for a course with no students registered for the resit exam by the resit exam application deadline.  A Late Fee will apply to all applications made after the deadline date.

Fees

Each course applied for costs £20.  A Late Fee of £30 will always be charged where an application is received after the deadlines given above. All fees must be paid at the time of application and are non-refundable. Cash should not be sent through the post.
