ZO3812: APPLIED MARINE BIOLOGY, FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE (2023-2024)

Course Overview

The course covers a diverse set of topics from fish diversity, through reproductive strategies and fisheries science to perspectives on sustainable aquaculture and marine environmental issues. Guest speakers from Marine Scotland Science and the Scottish fisherman’s association along with field visits to a freshwater fishery and Peterhead fish market will exemplify applied science in action and give you an appreciation of the industry view of fisheries management. Field work on rocky shores around Aberdeen will give you firsthand experience of fisheries data collection and analysis in the unusual context of a commercial invertebrate fishery.

Students will be provided with material which was pertinent to a legal dispute between ship owners and ship charterers in relation to ship hull biofouling (largely barnacles).

With staff guidance students will examine the evidence within the material provided and fulfil the brief supplied by a law firm.

Report on Littorina littorea Shell-fisheries Statistics

The assessment involves collection of data in the field (2 shores near the mouth of the river Dee) and the laboratory (Both individually and in pairs).

A considerable amount of data analysis of the data is expected, all with an emphasis on Fisheries.

Components of the exercise which attract grades:-

  • Attendance in the laboratory and in the field on two occasions.
  • Accurately entering exercise data.
  • Writing a Title, Introduction and full Methodology for a fisheries paper resultant from the data collection
  • Writing a Results section of said Fisheries paper covering the full range of analysis demonstrated in class

Environmental Impact Monitoring Tender

The assessment is a "group work" exercise where 4-5 students work together to produce a commercial tender to conduct environmental monitoring of the seas around Aberdeen.

Components of the exercise which attract grades:-

  • Contributions to the group "digital work space" (journal, ideas, files, etc)
  • A group tender summary document
  • A Group presentation (PowerPoint submitted), which is peer graded as well as staff graded
  • Attendance at two formal sessions            

25% of the grade provided by staff and students will be subjected to adjustment through Peer appraisal of performance within each group.

Essay

An essay (1500 words) written on one of two topics: Environmental consequences of fish farming or Fish farming diseases.

The basis for the essays will be provided in two formal lectures and students are expected to research the current, relevant literature.
