Introduction
Specialist Registrar training in Aberdeen is delivered over 5 years. Hospitals included in the rotation include:
Aberdeen Royal Infirmary main site which includes Aberdeen Maternity Hospital and the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital
Raigmore Hospital, Inverness
Dr Gray's Hospital, Elgin
Training is split into three phases.
The first phase is in the first year of training and includes a formal lecture course in Radiation Physics from September to December leading to the Part 1 exam of the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiology
Phase 2 encompasses the 2nd and 3rd year of training where Parts 2A and 2B of the FRCR are completed.
Phase 3 encompasses the final two years of training.
Training in Phases 1 and 2 consist of 3 month rotations through various subspecialties such as ultrasound, interventional or musculoskeletal radiology. A formal postgraduate radiology lecture series runs concurrently one half day a week. This course is devised with the intention of taking three modules of the FRCR 2B, 18 months into the rotation.
Each three month block is devised into spending four or five sessions in a specific subspecialty along with four sessions of general radiology, one session of supervised reporting and one study session..
Morning sessions are split into a 9-11 block and an 11-1 block followed by a single afternoon block from 2-5pm.
Phase 3 usually commences on passing the FRCR and comprises of four six month blocks, one or more of which can be spent at Raigmore. Two of these blocks can also be specified as specialist blocks with seven sessions a week set aside for the chosen subspecialty.
