Configuring your web browser to use the central proxy server

All PCs in teaching classrooms are configured to use the proxy service. Devices that have been set up by IT Services will have been configured to use the proxy service too.

However, personal devices may not be configured to use the proxy service.

How do I configure my personal device to use the proxy server?

Our factsheets contain instructions for adding (and removing) the proxy settings to the latest versions of Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox for Windows laptops, and Safari for Mac laptops:

Why use the proxy server?

Using the wireless networks

While connected to the University wireless networks eduroam and resnet you will need to set your web browser to route through the proxy server, otherwise you will only be able to access University of Aberdeen websites.

Accessing electronic resources

You will need to add the proxy settings if you want to access certain electronic resources when off campus, for example e-journals.

Other benefits

Connection to the web through a proxy server offers several benefits:

  • reduced usage of the external network as the proxy stores frequently accessed web pages on a local disk and delivers those to browsers in place of the originals
  • a faster response in many cases, when requested pages are amongst those previously stored by the proxy
  • a level of anonymity when browsing as your PC's network address is replaced by that of the proxy when making requests for web pages.
