Starting university and becoming involved in academic life can be an exciting experience. It is a real opportunity to meet new people, make friends and for some of you to have your first taste of living independently, away from your family.
Some of you might be a little apprehensive about leaving what you know. That is where our Student Accommodation Office comes in. We are here to help you find a suitable place to live and our experienced staff know how important it is to help you with the formalities involved. Living in accommodation with other students can give you a great start at university. You will make new friends during the first few weeks and these friends will stay with you throughout your university life and beyond.
If you're a new student, we guarantee to find you a place in our portfolio of accommodation, which includes Unite's Spring Garden and King Street Exchange complexes, provided your application reaches us by the deadline.
From late May onwards, applicants who have firmly accepted an unconditional or conditional offer of admission, you will be able to apply online for accommodation before the due date. If you are a late applicant, you should telephone the Accommodation Office to find out what is still available. We will try to find a place for you, though we cannot guarantee that you will be allocated University accommodation.
The University does not offer accommodation for married/family students but the Students' Association advertises private accommodation and further information can be obtained by e-mailing infoadvice@abdn.ac.uk
Halls of Residence
We offer a wide range of accommodation with wireless network throughout and all have facilities for disabled students. We have Crombie-Johnston Hall at the heart of the campus; this accommodates approximately 400 first-year students in single study-bedrooms, with meals provided in the Hub. Hillhead Halls is the student village on the bank of the River Don, with 520 en-suite and 1655 standard self-catering rooms. Student facilities include a shop, launderettes, floodlit all-weather tennis courts and a football pitch. A frequent bus service runs to the main campus and the city centre.
New Accommodation
The University's accommodation strategy continues to raise the quality of student accommodation to a standard which will seriously compete with accommodation at any other British institution. The first phase of the project, opened in 2008, comprises a four-storey development with 520 en-suite bedrooms, each of which shares a full kitchen and living room area at Hillhead Halls. The project is in partnership with Unite. Now that this phase is complete, the University plans to rebuild and refurbish the remaining stock on the Hillhead site.
Community Liaison Team
If you need information or advice when you're living in Halls of Residence, help is at hand from our Community Liaison Officer, supported by a team of Student Residents' Assistants (SRAs). Their job is to ensure your well-being and to help you get the most out of communal life.
Accommodation Bursaries
All new students from England, Wales and Northern Ireland entering in September 2013 are entitled to £2,000 in part payment of their accommodation fees for their first year of study at Aberdeen. This will be credited to your university account. If you are not staying in University accommodation then a payment of £2,000 will be paid to you to pay your accommodation provider.
Costs
Up-to-date information on University accommodation, including costs, is available from the Accommodation Office. You can also find out more by visiting: www.abdn.ac.uk/accommodation
