PROGRAMME LENGTH For Further Information ContactAlyson Millar
|
The Programme introduces students to current directions of research in social anthropology, ethnology and cultural history, and fosters awareness and critical reflection on the epistemological, conceptual and ethical problems entailed in the conduct of research in these fields. It aims to guide students in how to access, and use, key sources of research material (archival, visual, musical and museological), and to provide training in ethnographic fieldwork and related research methods (interviewing, audio-recording, filming and surveying).
Students completing the programme should be adequately prepared either to undertake further research towards the PhD in any one of the constituent disciplines or in an area that overlaps two or more of them, or to enter employment as researchers in fields outside the academy, such as in libraries and museums, branches of the media, or organisations concerned with aspects of human welfare and development, where the knowledge and skills cultivated by the programme are in demand.
Students are required to have a very good first degree in Social Anthropology, Cultural History, Ethnology or a closely related discipline.
The programme comprises the following three elements, each worth 60 credits:
a) Four modules comprising the School of Social Science Postgraduate Training Programme. (Where appropriate, one or more of these modules may be replaced with appropriate Level 5 modules in other Schools of the College of Arts and Social Sciences).
b) Two modules on Philosophy and Methods of Research in Social Anthropology, Ethnology and Cultural History.
c) A Dissertation of 12,500-15,000 words on an agreed topic.
Assessment will be based on extended essays for each individual course module, and the dissertation.
