    >>The Conflict and Security Studies Programme

The Conflict and Security Studies Programme (CSSP) offers two taught MLitt programmes that address contemporary debates, case studies and issues of international conflict and security.

    • The MLitt in Strategic Studies has a long established reputation in the field and tackles strategic theory, institutions, as well as case studies in security studies.

    • The MLitt in Middle East Security offers an in-depth study route into the complex dynamics that underpin conflict and security in the region.

For further course information and application forms, please contact the CSSP Director, Mr James Wyllie.

    >>MLitt International Relations

The MLitt in International Relations is a new postgraduate programme that will run from September 2006.

The MLitt in International Relations provides an in-depth analysis of key issues in contemporary international relations including development, security, globalisation, gender, identity, human rights and governance. The degree combines a core course on the conceptual and theoretical debates that underpin the discipline, with a range of options in both semesters. The options elements of the MLitt cater for individual paths toward thematic and regional specialisation.

For further course information and application forms, please contact the MLitt IR Director, Dr Claire Heristchi.

    >>MLitt Latin American Studies

The MLitt in Latin American Studies is a new inter-disciplinary postgraduate programme offered in partnership between PIR and Hispanic Studies.

Get 4 lines of blurb and when the programme is due to start from Andrea? Apparently, Hispanic studies may want to hold back for one more year…

For further course information and application forms, please contact the MLitt Latin American Studies, Dr Andrea Oelsner.

    >>MRes (Political Research)

The MRes in Political Research is the ESRC-recognised research training route for students wishing to undertake a PhD in politics or international relations. The MRes combines research training in the social sciences with specialised courses dealing with research in politics and international relations.

For further course information and application forms, please contact the MRes Director, Prof Neil Mitchell.

    >>PhD

A PhD typically takes 36 months of full-time, or 60 months of part-time study. Students wishing to pursue PhD research in the Department are usually registered initially for the taught MRes, with a view to transfer to PhD, unless they have received prior research training in Politics/IR or a cogent discipline. For an idea of research areas covered in the Department, you may want to check the staff pages for a detailed break-down of individual staff-members’ expertise.

    >>Why Study Politics and International Relations at Postgraduate Level?

Postgraduate training has become an important step in the development of careers in politics in the public sector (local government, government funded research, civil service, EU internships) and with private companies (Quangos, university research centres, polling surveys). A postgraduate qualification in international relations is particularly useful to students wishing to join relevant areas of the civil service (Foreign Office, Defence, Development), to work for non-governmental organisations (NGOs), or to secure internships in regional and global projects under the auspices of the EU, UN and OSCE. Private companies involved in research, global trade and insurance, international media reporting will also seek applicants with a postgraduate qualification in international relations.

Students who wish to continue with their studies after an MLitt/MRes and embark on a PhD can also opt for a research career in academia, or as specialist researchers.
