Undergraduate Prospectus 2012

The Department of Philosophy is one of the Departments in the School of Divinity, History and Philosophy, and its courses are primarily taken by students studying for an undergraduate MA in Arts & Social Sciences - either with or without Honours. In the former case, after the first two years (when a number of subjects are taken at first and second year levels), a student either does Philosophy alone (Single Honours) or combines Philosophy with another subject (Joint Honours).

How is it taught?

Teaching at all levels follows the traditional pattern of lectures and tutor-led group discussion. In the first two years courses are designed to introduce students to philosophical issues, while at the same time teaching critical thinking and logically argumentation. In the final two years of study, the subject matter of courses becomes more focused. The skills acquired in the earlier courses are drawn upon in small group discussions that accompany the lectures. Since the Department emphasizes the acquisition of skills relevant to the workplace, students are required to give presentations, undertake basic research, develop effective communicative and critical skills, and master certain uses of information technology. (Indeed, the use of IT is a growing feature of philosophy courses with the establishment of course-dedicated websites containing course materials and useful links to other sites relevant to the subject matter of the course.) The Department is proud of its reputation among students for providing a stimulating and supportive atmosphere and will continue to emphasize small group teaching and personal attention.

Research the Department is involved in

Members of the department have research interests in philosophy of science, philosophy of biology, metaphysics, moral philosophy, philosophy of physics, history of analytic philosophy, logic, epistemology, philosophy of religion, philosophy of language, and European philosophy. Visit the research page for more information. The department regularly hosts international conferences and workshops. For more information on these events, go to the events page for more information.
