I studied as an undergraduate at the University of Stirling and then, following something of a gap while I went off and had my adventures, as a postgraduate at the University of Glasgow. My doctoral work was on Iris Murdoch's moral philosophy and I've been described as someone who writes on continental topics (love, death, belonging and the otherness of animals) but in an analytic style. This strikes me as not a bad description. I've taught philosophy at the Universities of Aberdeen, Hull and (back again at) Aberdeen, where I currently hold the positions of Teaching Fellow with the Philosophy Department and Lecturer with the Centre for Lifelong Learning.

Primarily, I work on normative and applied ethics with a specialist interest in animals, The Philosophy of Love and Iris Murdoch's approach towards the virtues.

I'm currently co-operating with colleagues from Fribourg (Suisse) and Pardubice to put together an edited volume on Love's Objects with contributors from accross Europe and the US. At the same time, I'm working on a volume on space ethics for McFarland (due for submission in August 2013) and on a 'Religion and Emotion' chapter for the new edition of the Blackwell Companion to Religion.
Articles nearing submission include a cluster on Iris Murdoch, a paper on attitudes towards animals in philosophy of love, papers on animal rescue and self-immolation as civil disobedience and a paper looking at abortion and the problematic 'throwing away' metaphor. (Here's a clue, I think the metaphor is misleading but it's use is philosophically interesting.)
My most recent papers are 'The Politicization of Animal Love' delivered at the Cosmopolitan Animals event in London October 2012 and 'Love in Dark Times: Iris Murdoch on Loss and Void', delivered at the 53rd Annual Christian Philosophy Conference held at St John's Seminary in Wonersh, January 2013.
