Biography

I studied as an undergraduate at the University of Stirling and then, following something of a gap while I went off and had my adventures, as a postgraduate at the University of Glasgow. My doctoral work was on Iris Murdoch's moral philosophy and I've been described as someone who writes on continental topics (love, death, belonging and the otherness of animals) in an analytic style. This strikes me as not a bad description. I'm certainly interested in tradition (the legacy of religious modes of thought) and modernity (pushing ethics into new areas). I've taught philosophy at the Universities of Aberdeen, Hull and (back again at) Aberdeen, where I currently hold the positions of Teaching Fellow with the Philosophy Department and Lecturer with the Centre for Lifelong Learning.

Research Interests

Primarily, I work on normative and applied ethics with a specialist interest in animals and the significance of our humanity.

Current Research

I'm currently working on a volume on an book about space ethics for McFarland (due for delivery in October 2013) and organizing a workshop on 'Space Ethics and Policy' to be held at Aberdeen in August 2013 with (all going well) select papers to appear in an issue of Space Policy. Simultaneously, I'm working on a 'Religion and Emotion' chapter for the new edition of the Blackwell Companion to Religion and on a popular volume on Eastern Philosophy.

Articles currently under submission include a paper on attitudes towards animals in analytic philosophy of love, a paper on animal rescue as civil disobedience and a paper on Iris Murdoch's account of love. Papers nearing submission include a further cluster on Iris Murdoch, a paper on self-immolation as civil disobedience and a paper looking at abortion and the problematic 'throwing away' metaphor. (Here's a clue, I think the metaphor is misleading but its use is philosophically interesting.)

My most recent papers are 'The Politicization of Animal Love' delivered at the Cosmopolitan Animals event in London October 2012 and 'Love in Dark Times: Iris Murdoch on Loss and Void', delivered at the 53rd Annual Christian Philosophy Conference held at St John's Seminary in Wonersh, January 2013. My Next paper will be on 'Civility and Politicized Love in Gandhi' at the Spalding Symposium on Eastern Religions down at Merton College, Oxford, in April.
