Thomas Reid Page Conversion Table

Reid's works are commonly referred to in a number of different versions both complete and selected. This can make for difficulty in tracing passages and reading them in context. A very useful "Thomas Reid Page Conversion Table" has been compiled by Professor John-Christian Smith and the CSSP gratefully acknowledges his permission to include it among the research tools in "The Research Room". In this version it is possible to type in a page reference in one edition and find the relevant pages in others.

Author's Note: The following rows of page numbers give approximate conversions from the sixth (and eighth) edition of Hamilton (1863) to other printings of Reid's works that may be available. Reading left to right, abbreviations used include SWH for the Hamilton collection, L&B for Lehrer and Beanblossom (1975), DRB for Derek R. Brookes (1997), ADW for A. D. Woozley (1941), and BAB for Baruch A. Brody (1969). Both the Woozley edition and the Lehrer and Beanblossom edition are abridged, so some pages in the Hamilton collection are not found in them. The Brookes publication is a critical edition, so some references to items found in the traditional editions may not be applicable for it. These page conversions are provided to make this companion useful where the Hamilton collection is not available.

Departmental note: Page conversion has also been made available for the Derek R. Brookes / Knud Haakonssen (2002) edition of Essays on the Intellectual Powers of Man under the abbreviation DRBKH. The conversion guide for this volume is not included in Professor Smith's original.

Known issues and solution: Sometimes a search will produce no results because in a few cases the database holds page ranges rather than individual page numbers. When this happens, try inserting a page number adjacent to, or close to, the initial number entered.
