The department has been growing rapidly in the last two years, with the addition of nine new members of staff. As a result, the department now has staff who are active in the following areas of research:
The research environment at the University of Aberdeen has also undergone an extensive overhaul. The department now includes the Northern Institute of Philosophy, a dedicated philosophy research institute, currently focusing its activities on contemporary work in Epistemology, Metaphysics and the Philosophy of Language and Mind. Members of the department are also involved in the foundation and development (with the History department) of the Centre for History of Science, Technology, Philosophy and Medicine. These research centres will serve as a focus for two major areas of research excellence at the University of Aberdeen: in contemporary work in Language, Epistemology, Mind and Metaphysics; and in the History and Philosophy of Science (and the History of Philosophy more generally).
The Northern Institute of Philosophy (NIP), directed by Crispin Wright (New York University and University of Aberdeen), is a research and training environment founded on principles of collaboration. The objective of NIP is to conduct and foster collaborative research on cardinal issues in Metaphysics, Epistemology and the Philosophies of Logic, Language, Mathematics and Mind. NIP events and activities include:
See the NIP website for details.
The Department has recently joined forces with the Department of History to form the Centre for the History and Philosophy of Science, Technology and Medicine. Areas of special philosophical concentration include Early Modern and 18th Century History and Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Physics, Philosophy of Biology, Philosophy of the Environment and Evolutionary Ethics, and Literature and Science. We offer a range of postgraduate degrees, and welcome applications from students who wish to work on interdisciplinary and well as disciplinary topics that can be accommodated within CHPSTM. See http://www.abdn.ac.uk/philosophy/pgrad.shtml for more information. Library resources at the University of Aberdeen in 18th and 19th century philosophy, medicine and science are outstanding, and we invite interested researchers to consider spending short visits as well as longer sabbaticals in Aberdeen.
There is also a regular Departmental Research Seminar, at which visiting speakers and members of the department present work in progress. For details of past and upcoming seminars, see the department’s ‘events’ page.
What follows is intended to help readers get an idea of what area staff members are currently or usually working in. The categorisation is quite broad and only gives a basic idea of the current research interests of the department. For more detail on the research projects and publications, see the department's ‘staff’ page.
