Starting November 2012, NIP will run a one-day Philosophy with Children course in Aberdeen for primary and secondary schoolteachers and education providers. Research indicates that introducing Philosophy in the classroom, even for only one hour per week, brings several benefits to pupils, including:
- improved numeracy and literacy skills
- improved behaviour in the playground
- greater ability to think creatively and critically about complex matters
- greater ability to understand, recognize and respect alternative reasonable viewpoints
- greater willingness to subject one's own views to critical scrutiny and, where reason requires, to improve and refine them
The course illustrates how to facilitate one-hour sessions of Philosophical inquiry with pupils of all ages. No background in Philosophy is required.
The Philosophy with Children course had its first run on November 12, 2012. Feedback from participants is available here.
The next course will take place on Tuesday May 7th, 2013, 9am-3pm.
