How to apply for affiliation with NIP

Affiliation of your Philosophy PhD with The Northern Institute of Philosophy is conditional upon admission to the University of Aberdeen Philosophy PhD programme. Applicants should follow the guidelines and procedures listed on the Philosophy webpage. When completing the Philosophy PhD application form, please state under section 2 ‘TYPE OF STUDY’, answer A. Postgraduate Research – Award ‘PhD’ and under PROGRAMME/SCHOOL write Philosophy (Northern Institute of Philosophy), as per the example highlighted in yellow below (excerpt from page one of the application form):

Following successful application for admission to the Philosophy PhD programme at the University of Aberdeen, candidates who have indicated interest in affiliating their PhD with the Northern Institute of Philosophy will, at this stage only, receive instruction on how to go about applying for affiliation.

The application for affiliation with NIP requires candidates to:

• Complete a short application form (which will be sent following successful admission to the Aberdeen Philosophy PhD Programme)
• Submit a short writing sample (max 5000 words).

The Northern Institute of Philosophy will consider PhD affiliation applications at Special Council Meetings, the final of which is in July. It is the applicant’s responsibility to allow sufficient time for the processing of the school application before the NIP Special Council Meeting. Candidates will be informed of the outcome of their affiliation applications within one week of these Special Council Meeting taking place.

NIP aims to have a PhD population of 8 students.

Affiliation with NIP is not automatic upon acceptance to the University of Aberdeen Philosophy PhD Programme.
