MLitt in Philosophy

12 months full-time, 24 months part-time.

For those with a degree in Philosophy (or otherwise relevant background) seeking a more advanced postgraduate taught degree, or who plan to continue doing a PhD, the School offers a one-year taught Master's degree in Philosophy.

The current MLitt programme is divided into two half-sessions.

Students take 45 credits of training courses, namely:         

• PH5052 Philosophy Proseminar (15 credits, first half-session),     
• PH5552 Work in Progress Seminar (15 credits, second half-session),
• one other training course; for the past two years this has been PH5541 Conference Skills (15 credits, second half-session)

They take further 75 credits of taught modules in specific areas of Philosophy. Up to 30 of these can be chosen from other fields in the College of Arts and Sciences (with the agreement of the programme co-ordinator) or taken as a 30-credit independent research project.

They complete their studies with a dissertation (60 credits) on a topic of their own choice, in consultation with a supervisor.

Entrance Requirements

In general, an upper second class Honours degree in Philosophy or in a subject with Philosophy as a major component. For international applicants, proof of proficiency in English is required. The accepted certificates and minimum scores are listed as follows: IELTS overall score 6.5, which must include Listening 5.5 or above, Reading 6.0 or above, Speaking 5.5 or above, Writing 6.0 or above.
