MLitt in History and Philosophy of Science

Programme Co-ordinators: Dr Guido Bacciagaluppi (Philosophy) and Dr Ben Marsden (History - on leave 2011-2012).

12 months full-time, 24 months part-time.

For those with a degree in History, Philosophy or another relevant discipline who seek a more advanced postgraduate taught degree or who plan to continue doing a PhD, the School offers a one-year taught Master's degree in History and Philosophy of Science.

Students choose between one of two overlapping streams (philosophy or history).

Philosophy stream

Students in the philosophy stream take 45 credits of training courses, namely:

• Philosophy Proseminar (15 credits, first half-session),
• a second training course in philosophy, currently Conference Skills (15 credits, second half-session),
• Researching the History and Philosophy of Science (15 credits, second half-session).

They take further 75 credits of taught modules, normally in specific areas of Philosophy or History. At least 15 of these must be in History.

They complete their studies with a dissertation (60 credits) of a topic in Philosophy of Science of their own choice, in consultation with a supervisor.

History stream

Students in the history stream take 45 credits of training courses, namely:

• Writing the History of Science (15 credits, first half-session),
• Introduction to Historical Research (15 credits, first half-session),
• Researching the History and Philosophy of Science (15 credits, second half-session).

They take further 75 credits of taught modules, normally in specific areas of Philosophy or History. At least 15 of these must be in Philosophy.

They complete their studies with a dissertation (60 credits) of a topic in History of Science of their own choice, in consultation with a supervisor.

Entrance Requirements

In general, an upper second class Honours degree in History or Philosophy or with a major component in History or Philosophy. For international applicants, proof of proficiency in English is required. The accepted certificates and minimum scores are listed as follows: IELTS overall score 6.5, which must include Listening 5.5 or above, Reading 6.0 or above, Speaking 5.5 or above, Writing 6.0 or above.
