Paul Tomassi was Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Aberdeen until his sudden, tragic and untimely death at the age of 43. Though he taught and wrote widely, his exceptional gifts as a teacher were most evident in his logic classes. Thanks to the striking combination of a passionate love for his subject and consummate skill at teaching it, the most reluctant students became enthusiasts, and the most able discovered a whole world of intellectual excitement. This impact was extended far beyond his own classes through his highly successful textbook Logic , first published in 1999, and adopted by logic teachers across the world.

The Paul Tomassi Prize in Logic commemorates this gifted man and perpetuates both his enthusiasm and his accomplishment. It will be awarded annually to the most distinguished performance in formal or philosophical logic by a student in any year of study at the University of Aberdeen. Other things being equal, preference will be given to honours students in formal logic, a level of study that Paul specially wanted to encourage.
