Migrating to Outlook 2007
Outlook 2007 is part of the Microsoft Office 2007 suite of applications. The University is migrating to Office 2007 as the supported version of Office.
- Why are we migrating?
- When will my PC be migrated?
- Is training available for Outlook 2007?
- I have a Mac - can I use Outlook 2007?
- Will I still be able to sync my Mobile Device with Outlook 2007?
- Can I run both Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 on the same PC?
1. Why are we migrating?
Office 2007 is the default installation on all classroom PCs, and many students have Office 2007 installed on their personal laptops/PCs. Office 2007 uses a new file format which is not compatible with older versions. By moving to Office 2007, academic and support staff will avoid compatibility issues with students' documents. Other benefits to Outlook users include:
- full set of voicemail features in Outlook 2007
- new, fluid user interface
- full integration with Office Communicator (available on campus soon)
2. When will my PC be migrated?
We hope to complete migration of Staff PCs to Office 2007 by September 2010. For more information, see our Office 2007 web pages.
3. Is training available for Outlook 2007?
Yes. The DIT Training & Documentation (TaD) Team offers an introductory e-mail and calendaring course on a regular basis. For further details and online registration form, visit the TaD Web site at www.abdn.ac.uk/tad/courses/.
The course workbook is also available from the downloads area of the TaD Web site at www.abdn.ac.uk/tad/downloads.
Note: Access is restricted to University of Aberdeen - login required
4. I have a Mac - can I use Outlook 2007?
Outlook is available for Mac as part of the Microsoft Office 2011 suite (launched October 2010). Office 2011 requires OS X v10.5.8 or later.
Mac users can also use Outlook's browser-based mail client Outlook Web Access (OWA Light) for their e-mail and calendaring needs. OWA works with Safari, Firefox and Opera browsers and has most of the functionality of Outlook.
See our Mac Users page for more information.
5. My Mobile Device is synchronised with Outlook 2003. What will happen to my settings when I move to Outlook 2007?
If your Mobile Decice is already synchronised with the Exchange Server, your settings should remain in place when you upgrade. Should you experience any problems, please contact the Service Desk.
6. Can I run both Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 on the same PC?
No. It is not possible to run both versions of Office on the same PC. The installation of Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 on your PC will result in Outlook 2003 being completely removed.
