After graduating from Manchester University with a BSc (Hons) degree in Physics, I came to Aberdeen to do an MSc in Information Technology (Medical Physics) followed by a PhD in Biomedical Physics and Bioengineering. My thesis was concerned with how removal of the nucleus pulposus from the intervertebral disc changes the way that the annulus fibrosus deforms under compression and how replacement can help reverse these changes. After my PhD I investigated the influence of water on the physical properties pHEMA hydrogels. In 2001 I obtained funding for a seven month visit to the University of Calgary to work with Dr Nigel Shrive on a finite element model of the knee meniscus. Since returning to Aberdeen, I was involved in investigating the medical applications of rapid prototyping and a number of other projects in the field of biomaterials and biomechanics. I am currently developing a 3D finite element model of the hip.
