Alasdair Sutherland is a Clinical Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Orthopedics at the University of Aberdeen and Aberdeen Teaching Hospitals, and Director of the North of Scotland Orthopaedic Training Programme. He graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 1990 and completed his surgical and orthopaedic training in Scotland, including two years researching the relationship between post-traumatic stress and recovery after injury being awarded the research degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) with honours. From there he undertook three Specialist Fellowships (Trauma, Arthroplasty, Knee Reconstruction) in Melbourne, Australia. He was appointed to his current post in 2003.
In 2008, Mr Sutherland was awarded the American-British-Canadian (ABC) Travelling Fellowship, and spent 6 weeks travelling with six other young surgeons (from Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand) to visit leading orthopaedic centres in Canada and the USA, in order to exchange ideas. This Fellowship recognizes clinical and research excellence and leadership in orthopaedics, and is the most prestigious such award in world orthopaedics.
Clinical Interests

Mr Sutherland’s clinical interests centre on knee replacement and knee ligament reconstruction surgery, including sports injuries such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, as well as arthroscopic (key-hole) surgery of the knee.

Research Interests

Mr Sutherland’s research interests are in measuring and optimising orthopaedic outcomes, post traumatic psychopathology, and the role of placebo surgery in trials.  He has published over 20 scientific papers and given numerous presentations at local, national and international level, and his current active research includes:

  • 5 year follow up of trauma outcomes – the GTOS cohort.
  • Immunonutrition in hip fracture patients.
  • Value of arthroscopic lavage in osteoarthritis of the knee.
  • Growth factors in knee fluid after ACL reconstruction.
  • Functional MRI scanning of the brain to assess proprioceptive function after knee ligament injury.
  • The role of morphine in addition to local anaesthetic in analgesia after ACL reconstruction.
  • Long-term functional and radiological outcome after anterior cruciate reconstruction.
  • ACL integrity in knee osteoarthritis.
  • Lower leg vascular insufficiency after total knee arthroplasty: a clinical study.

Research has been funded by the NHS Health Technology Assessment Unit, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Tenovus Scotland and NHS Endowments.
