Head of Department: Professor John V. Forrester
The Department The Department of Ophthalmology was established in 1984 from private funds and is known as the Sir Andrew and Lady Lewis Department of Ophthalmology. The Head of Department occupies the Cockburn Chair of Ophthalmology.
The Department has since its inception developed an eye research programme that addresses many causes of blindness in today's world. It is one of only two Departments in the United Kingdom that has focused its attention on the fundamental causes of eye disease. The Department has a major programme of research in two key areas, Uveitis and Diabetic Retinopathy. In addition, research into other causes of blindness such as corneal disease and inherited retinal disease are also being undertaken.
