THE OLD TOWN HOUSE

GATEWAY TO OLD ABERDEEN
Old Town House Present Day - 2005

In the interests of economy, the original council of Old Aberdeen insisted that stones and ornamental features from its previous Town House be re-used by Jaffrey. The panel above the front door for instance is dated 1721. The dormer pediment on the East wall of the house was rescued from its 1643 predecessor. What you see today is a carefully conserved and preserved version of the House that Jaffrey built.

The University has just completed vital restoration work on the Old Town House with generous support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Aberdeen City Council. Great care was taken to ensure that only renewable materials were used and a highly specialised team of local craftspeople were employed to ensure sympathetic conservation.

The Old Town House is now an impressive information and Student reception centre for our current and potential students to learn about the wide variety of study options available at the University of Aberdeen.

It is also a focal point for visitor trails, events and information about Old Aberdeen. Once again, it is a busy hive of activity used for the wider community.
