The University of Aberdeen has recently restored the Old Town House as part of its commitment to conserving the historic buildings of Old Aberdeen. After years of light use, we are delighted that this iconic building has been restored to daily use and regains its status as the gateway to Old Aberdeen.

In 1787 the Council of Aberdeen decided to completely re-build its Town House and have it designed by local builder George Jaffrey. The emphasis then, and still is, that the Old Town House was built by the people, for the people. With the open-air market located directly outside, the Old Town House was a hub of activity for this busy trading settlement. In it tolls were collected, criminals imprisoned and meetings of the Burgh Council Court were held. The building was paid for by subscriptions from the local merchants' society, the Incorporated Trades and Masonic Lodge, who all had rights to use the building for meetings.
