The Madonna Plaque

Given by Douglas Strachan, the artist who glazed so many of the windows, in 1944. It comes from North Germany and was carved around 1490. She is contemporary with the Chapel and a reminder of the Chapel's dedication to Mary. All the many medieval images of Mary were removed at the Reformation. The scenes around her are prefigurations: Moses and the Burning Bush; Ezekiel at the gate of the Temple; Gideon and the fleece; and Augustus with the Tiburtine Sibyl.
