Student Learning Service (SLS)
The Student Learning Service (SLS) can help you to develop your academic skills through workshops, individual study advice sessions (for taught postgraduates only) and online resources. Individual study advice is also available for students with dyslexia. Online learning resources for self-help are available at any time: see Academic Learning Resources in MyAberdeen.
Workshops run in term time and include topics such as: planning to make the most of your first semester, studying in the UK, note-taking, critical thinking, academic writing, presentation skills and time management. Full details of the workshop programme will be published in late January, 2012, at www.abdn.ac.uk/sls/workshops.
Academic Tips
Working towards a degree is challenging - after all, anything worth having is worth working for! The staff at the University of Aberdeen are here to help - don't be afraid to ask!
-
Establish a regular study routine.
-
Attend all classes and complete any preparation in advance, e.g. reading, preparing answers to set questions, solving a problem or preparing a presentation.
-
Write up the lecture notes soon after the lecture to make sure you understand them; add to them from the recommended background reading.
-
When asking for help, try to have a specific and direct question - and do this early, not just the day before your assignment is due!
-
Use your tutorials or seminar groups to ask questions - take the initiative, if you don't understand something the chances are someone else in your class has the same question.
-
Questions are encouraged and respected at University, so don't just answer them - ask them too!
-
Talk to your lecturer or tutor. They will have lots of good advice to help you cope with your studies and to help you understand your lectures or the subject. Often they will advertise times when any student can pop into their offices, or you can always send them an email.
-
Suggest to classmates that you study together or form a study group.
Prepare for Success
Prepare for Success is an interactive pre-arrival learning tool for international students who are getting ready to come to the UK to study. The learning resources about different aspects of academic life in the UK help you find out what British academic life is like and what kind of academic skills you will need for effective study. As well as preparing you for what to expect during your studies, the activities provide scope for language improvement. There is also an interactive FAQs page where you can find simple answers to questions about study in the UK.
Prepare for Success is intended primarily for international students whose first language is not English. It is aimed at students with an IELTS level between 5.0 and 7.5 or equivalent.
If you are an international student planning to come and study in further or higher education in the UK, you can use these learning activities to prepare yourself for academic life and improve your English Language skills. Use the learning resources in any order you like by clicking on a title or go to the 'study pathways' page if you would like to search by skill or topic. You can watch the demo to see how to use an activity.
