New University library: start of work on Academic Square
Work began in June 2010 on preparations for the new pedestrian Academic Square connecting the Meston and Fraser Noble Buildings with the new University library. The first task for the contractors will be water drainage, with the installation of a storm drain routed across the area currently used for car parking between Fraser Noble and Meston, to link with the main drain to the east of Elphinstone Road. In addition, the works will include the installation of underground rainwater holding tanks to prevent sudden high volumes being discharged into main drain during heavy rainfall. |

Temporary hoardings have been erected. Permanent hoardings will follow enclosing the entire parking area east of the new library to Elphinstone Road. The existing pedestrian access routes to Meston, Fraser Noble and QML will remain and a controlled access between the entrances to Meston and Fraser Noble will be provided.
This will result in the permanent removal of all parking spaces between Fraser Noble and Meston Buildings. Alternative spaces will be provided for disabled drivers in the Meston Quad, rear vehicular access of the Elphinstone Flats, and to the south of QML.
A detailed map showing the new access routes, disabled parking, and fire assembly points is available below:
