Research Interests
Cement Chemistry and Radioactive Waste Immobilisation
Much of Professor Glasser's research is sensitive to the needs of and is supported by government and industry. The largest single project is supported by the Commission of the European Communities. It is coordinated by Aberdeen and involves 10 partners throughout the E.C. Its objective is to develop, test and predict future performance of cement barriers to contain radioactive wastes. It thus joins theory and practical applications, including a demonstration at depth (180m) in an underground laboratory. A second Community project, JETDEM (Joint European Thermodynamics Demonstration) has as its objective assessing the applicability and data needs of thermodynamic computations to a wide range of industrial and environmental projects. New cementitious binders are being developed in a project with Chinese and UK partners. Other projects are supported by Magnox Electric, Lafarge, Cape Insulation and Holderbank.
Professor Glasser is a member of the Cements Research Group at Aberdeen University Department of Chemistry. The group has research activity over a broad range of areas.
The Cement Group is also enriched by a steady stream of visiting scientists: for example, from Korea, Japan, Turkey and Spain.
