Biography

B.Sc. Galway 1996 (Physics)
M.Sc. King's College, London 1997 (Communictions and Radio Engineering)
Ph.D. Imperial College 2002 (Specifying Agent Commuication Languages)

In August 2003 I started as a Lecturer in Computing Science at the University of Aberdeen. I joined the Aberdeen Agents research group and carried out research in multi-agent systems, and game-theoretic aspects thereof, as well as agent communication languages. I was PI on an EPSRC project (2006-2008), and co-investigator on an EU FP7 project (2008-2010).

Since 2002 I have been developing a research strand in modelling cognitive development, and as of 2010 I have shifted my research focus more fully into this area. I am currently PI for one Leverhulme project in modelling infant cognitive development.

Research Interests

I am intertested in the "developmental" approach to Artificial Intelligence, especially copying ideas from how human infants learn. I study infant and childhood cognitive development, especially how new knowledge can build on old knowledge; I focus on means-end behaviour and precursors to tool use. In order to test ideas, I build computational models of infant sensorimotor development. My goal is to build a simulated infant that can play in a simulated world and develop robust and transferrable knowledge of actions with objects, eventually leading to simple tool use; for example to use a stick to knock down a stack of blocks. The model (i.e. simulated "infant") should learn in the same way as a human infant learns, by experimentation and observation.
