Intercultural competence: philosophical, curricular and practical issues for music education

Thursday 30th September, 20104pm-5pmMacRobert Building, Room 028All WelcomeMulticultural education has been a feature of educational provision in the UK since the 1960s. During the 1980s, the study of world musics became more prominent in school and university curricula in many countries, since which time music educators have produced schemes, resources and commercial materials in a variety of formats and based on differing perspectives on multiculturalism. The terms used to describe approaches to teaching and learning in this area convey a variety of philosophical and ethical positions. My paper identifies several foundational perspectives that govern the principles and practice of multiculturalism in music education. It considers the subject of intercultural competence through approaches to music education, multicultural education and curricular theorizing. In so doing, I advocate practices that value music making in intercultural contexts and which recognize the role of our own musical identity and culture in shaping our perspective on music education. The presentation will include questions that relate to the issues raised in the paper; these are intended to encourage personal reflection and discussion.
