Steel Pans

The University ensemble consists of three tenor pans, two double second pans, two guitar pans, 3 sets of cello pans (one of which is a set of quads) and three sets of bass pans. Originally, the Steel Pans came from Northern College of Education where they were played regularly as part of the World Music Elective and by the ensemble at the time – Northern Steel. After merging with the University, the steel pan ensemble continued. Links with the Aberdeen International Youth Festival also saw the ensemble expand as they bought additional pans from Gary Straker’s Steel Orchestra from Trinidad which gives the group a more balanced sound overall and allows more students to be part of the ensemble.

The Steel Pan ensemble currently meets on Tuesday evenings in the MacRobert Percussion Annex. Please contact Kirsty Robertson for more information if you would like to join - kirrobertson@aberdeencity.gov.uk
