06 April 2017Talk: Cover Stories UncoveredTalk: Cover Stories Uncovered
Speaker: Jane Pirie, Rare Books Cataloguer and Curator of 'Cover Stories'
Venue: The Special Collections Seminar Room, Sir Duncan Rice Library, Aberdeen
Thursday 13th April, 6-7pm
To accompany the exhibition, Cover Stories, its curator, Jane Pirie, will discuss the choice of exhibits and expand on the stories behind the bindings. The University of Aberdeen's Special Collections has a rich and varied collection of books in their original bindings. The libraries of King’s and Marischal Colleges were endowed through the centuries with many ornately covered books as well as those with more humble, but just as fascinating, utilitarian bindings.
As well as looking at some of the people involved in the production and binding of books, the talk will focus on some of the notable individuals for whom the books were bound and examine the books as objects of ownership and of their significance in regard to the history of bookbinding.
There will also be an opportunity to take a closer look at some other bindings of books in the University’s collections at this event.
Jane Pirie has worked in the department of Special Collections for nearly 25 years. In addition to cataloguing rare books, she specialises in Provenance and Bindings.
