Mature Applicants

Mature Applicant Academic Entrance Requirements for 2012 entry

Applicants who have completed full time secondary education and who have elected to delay university entry, but whose life-long experiences are comparable at least to those of a graduate are considered as "mature applicants".

Important Information for Mature Applicants

  • Make sure that your referee is able to discuss your attributes as a medical applicant, as well as have knowledge of your academic progress.
  • Estimated grades for candidates whose examination results are not available at the time of application must be included on the UCAS application form.
  • Additional documentation that is sent directly to the Medical Admissions Office in support of an application can only be considered if it is received by the UCAS deadline of 15 October
  • All applicants for Medicine must take the UK Clinical Aptitude Test prior to application.  Please see www.ukcat.ac.uk
  • Successful applicants must provide their original qualification certificates prior to admission to the MBChB programme

For further important notes see Entrance Requirements

Minimum Academic Requirements

Our minimum academic requirements may be achieved through different routes:

  • School-leaving qualifications:

Such applicants are expected to achieve the same minimum academic requirements for entry as school leavers. However, these qualifications may be obtained over two diets of examinations. Please see Entrance Requirements

  • Non-Honours or 'Ordinary' degree:

These degrees do not fulfil our minimum academic requirements.  However such applicants may offer additional qualifications e.g our school-leaving academic qualifications, undertake one of the Access Courses mentioned below, or, for non-honours graduates in Healthcare, 'upgrade' their degree (please see Graduate Applicants)

  • Access to Medicine Higher Education Diplomas recognised by the University of Aberdeen:

Mature candidates who have successfully undertaken one of the following Access courses can also be considered for entry to Aberdeen, providing that an Honours degree achievement of less than 2:1 has not previously been undertaken:

    • Access to Medicine: The College of West Anglia. Candidates should be predicted to/achieve a "Distinction" grade (70% and above) in all subjects.
    • Access to Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy: Manchester College of Arts & Technology. Candidates should be predicted to/achieve Grade A or A* (70% or above) in all subjects excluding IT and achieve a "Pass" in IT.
    • Access to Medicine: Stow College, Glasgow. Candidates should be predicted to/achieve "Merit" grade (70% or above) in all subjects excluding IT and achieve a "Pass" in IT.

Access to Medicine Diplomas can only be offered by Mature applicants and cannot be offered as an 'upgrade' of inadequate school leaving qualifications

Applications cannot normally be considered on the basis of National Certificates and Diplomas. (Honours graduates of the Open University are referred to the section on Graduate Applicants).

  • Mature applicants who offer school-leaving or non-honours (ordinary) degree qualifications must have completed and achieved our minimum academic requirements within SIX years of the start of their proposed entry to the MBChB programme.
  • Mature applicants who offer one of the Access to Medicine Courses (described above) must have completed and achieved our minimum academic requirements within TWO years of the start of their proposed entry to the MBChB programme.

Typical Offer for Mature Applicants

  • Should the above minimum qualifications and Chemistry requirement be achieved, a typical offer would be Unconditional
  • If our requirements are not yet achieved, a typical offer will be Conditional upon achieving a minimum of the predicted requirements stated above
