Programme Outline: Medicine (MBChB)

The MBChB programme has been the subject of a major curriculum review in the past few years and is currently in transition between the old and the new formats, although many elements of the old curriculum have been retained. The previous curriculum has been in place since 1995 and the changes have been stimulated by several factors

  • The new edition of Tomorrow's Doctors published in September 2009.
  • The changes in healthcare delivery and post graduate training since 1995.
  • Developments and innovation in Medical Education since 1995.
  • The opening of the Suttie Centre in 2009, bringing increased opportunities for integration of basic science and clinical teaching.

The MBChB programme in Aberdeen is system based from years 1 to 4, while Year 5 introduces the student to the generic professional skills of the Junior Doctor in the healthcare team.  The course is based on the outcomes of "Tomorrow's Doctors" (www.gmc-uk.org/education/undergraduate/tomorrows_doctors.asp and "The Scottish Doctor" (www.scottishdoctor.org), a set of outcomes agreed by all Scottish medical schools as defining the competencies and attributes of their graduates.
