Teaching Centres

Where does teaching take place?

The Foresterhill campus in Aberdeen is the main centre for teaching and is the home for the medical and dental school and three main hospitals – Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Aberdeen Maternity Hospital and Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital.  Woodend Hospital (Orthopaedics, Elderly Medicine and Rehabilitation) and Cornhill Hospital (Mental Health) are nearby. The Suttie Centre for Teaching and Learning in Healthcare, opened in 2009, is a new purpose built educational centre on the Foresterhill site which is the main home for formal teaching.   The Aberdeen Dental School and hospital also opened during session 2009/10.

Dr Gray's Hospital in Elgin is 60 miles north of Aberdeen and is a District General. It accepts final year students on 8 week clinical attachment.

Raigmore Hospital, Inverness is a major satellite campus 100 miles from Aberdeen, which is home to around 70 students at any one time. Phase III runs in parallel in Aberdeen and Inverness, whilst 8 week clinical attachments in final year are also available from here.  Inverness is the hub for the Remote and Rural option which is described below.

In addition to the above, there are opportunities for GP attachments in Phase III and IV across the whole of Scotland, and for hospital attachments in Phase IV in rural and island hospitals in Fort William, Stornoway, Orkney, Shetland and Wick.  These attachments are a major component of the Remote and Rural option described above.

As well as the Medical School on the Foresterhill site, the hospitals incorporate the full range of clinical facilities with superb teaching and extensive research facilities. The clinical locations and facilities offered by Aberdeen are exceptional and give all students the opportunity to study medicine in the widest of locations. Students are able to undertake arguably, the most widespread and diverse clinical placements in the UK. We are also strongly interested in Medical Humanities at Aberdeen and the virtual Centre for Medical Humanities co-ordinates activities in this field.
