Teaching

The Section co-ordinates a portfolio of postgraduate courses and Master Degree programmes within the Graduate School of the College of Life Sciences and Medicine.  The members of staff in the Section also have responsibilities within the MBChB, BSc Health Sciences and BSc medical sciences undergraduate degree programmes.

Population Health provides 6 taught postgraduate programmes in Health Services and Public Health Research, International Health and Management, Human Nutrition and MetabolismMolecular NutritionPublic Health Nutrition (all September starts) and also the new Global Health programme (January start).  Our programmes draw students from various backgrounds and from all over the world which encourages sharing of ideas and cultures, current and future collaboration and broadening of horizons.

The Public Health programme provides a basis in health services research methods with the emphasis on public health issues as a taught component and further includes statistics, epidemiology, health economics and health management.  The International Health programme includes an additional taught component focussing on international and management aspects.  The Human Nutrition and Metabolism programme is accredited by the Nutrition Society. Both Nutrition programmes provide a basis in human nutrition, research methods and statistics, however the Human Nutrition and Metabolism programme has a stronger focus on laboratory-based research whereas the Public Health Nutrition programme examines nutrition in populations.

For all programmes, students are expected to plan and execute a research project under  the guidance of experienced supervisors within the Population Health Section and research units within the College of Life Sciences and Medicine like the Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health (RINH), Health Economics Research Unit (HERU), Health Services Research Unit (HSRU), Initiative for Maternal Mortality Programme Assessment (IMMPACT), Centre for Sustainable International Development (CSID).  Full research Masters (MRes) programmes (no taught component) and PhDs are also supervised by members of the section.
