Epidemiology

The Epidemiology Group was re-established in 2005 with the appointment of Professor Gary Macfarlane as the new Chair of Epidemiology. Other members of academic staff include Dr Gareth Jones and Dr Julie Bruce (both Senior Lecturers in Epidemiology) and Dr Dong Pang and Dr Sohinee Bhattacharya (both Lecturers).

The main research focus of the group is the study of the epidemiology of pain. This relates principally to common musculoskeletal pain conditions and the Epidemiology Group works closely with researchers in the Bone and Musculoskeletal Research Programme in the University's Institute of Medical Sciences (www.abdn.ac.uk/ims/bone) and with other members of the Aberdeen Pain Research Collaboration (www.abdn.ac.uk/aprc).

There are four main programmes of research within the epidemiology group:

  • Epidemiology of chronic pain - from risk factors to mechanisms
  • Musculoskeletal health
  • Post-surgical pain and
  • Epidemiology of reproductive health

To view more details on these please click here.

In addition to the supervision of research postgraduates, the group co-ordinates and delivers the epidemiology teaching on the undergraduate and postgraduate courses run by the University's section of Population Health.

  • MSc in Health Service and Public Health Research
  • MSc in International Health and Management
  • BSc in Health Sciences

We also run a week-long Intensive Course in Applied Epidemiology. The course is particularly aimed at practitioners/researchers in musculoskeletal disease although covers concepts and methods common to all chronic disease epidemiology.

The Intensive Course in Applied Epidemiology is now FULL for 2010. If you are interested in attending in 2011 please contact epidemiology@abdn.ac.uk and we will let you know when details of next years course become available.

We are co-hosts (together with the Universities of Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow) of the World Congress of Epidemiology which will be held in Edinburgh, August 7th-11th 2011. Preliminary information and the opportunity to register interest is available at www.epidemiology2011.com.
